Downtown Ottumwa restaurants see sales jump thanks to new Lunch Club initiative

Ottumwa, Iowa – A community‑driven effort called the Lunch Club is breathing new life into downtown Ottumwa’s restaurant scene. Launched by Main Street Ottumwa, the program gathers a group of local professionals and residents once a month to dine together at a different downtown eatery, filling tables that have often sat empty.

Boost in sales and foot traffic

Restaurant owners are already seeing measurable results. “I would maybe say like a 30, 40% went up, the following week also the sales increased for a little bit, after the first two, three weeks,” said Kyaw Tay, owner of Karen’s Thai Cuisine. “The more people that come in, experience it for the first time, and have a good experience, they’re going to tell somebody else, or they’re going to come back, and we’ve seen a lot of that already. A lot of repeat traffic,” added Todd Ebelsheiser, proprietor of Owl’s Nest.

Both owners noted that the influx of new diners not only lifted daily receipts but also sparked word‑of‑mouth referrals, a critical factor for small businesses that rely on local patronage.

Community partnership at the heart of the effort

The Lunch Club is part of a broader strategy to revitalize downtown Ottumwa, where more than 20 storefronts sit vacant. By concentrating a group of diners in one location each month, the initiative creates a predictable surge of customers, giving restaurant staff a chance to showcase their menus and service quality.

“We wanted a simple, low‑cost way to support our downtown merchants,” said a spokesperson for Main Street Ottumwa. “The Lunch Club brings people together, supports local jobs, and helps keep our historic main street vibrant for families and visitors alike.”

Looking ahead

Organizers plan to continue the monthly rotations, inviting new restaurants to participate and expanding the club’s membership base. They hope the model can be replicated in other Iowa towns facing similar downtown challenges.

For Ottumwa residents, the Lunch Club offers more than a meal; it provides a tangible way to invest in the community’s economic health while enjoying a variety of local flavors. As the program gains momentum, downtown business owners remain optimistic that sustained patronage will help close the gap on empty storefronts and preserve the town’s historic character for future generations.
