Downtown Moline Parking Study Seeks Community Input

In Moline, Illinois, city officials are actively seeking community input to address parking concerns in the downtown area. On June 3, an interactive public open house was held at Mercado on Fifth, drawing residents, business owners, and visitors to discuss the future of parking in the city.

Community Concerns and Observations

Lindsey Johanson, co-owner of Joh’s Cafe on Sixth Avenue, highlighted the difficulty of finding parking during peak evening hours. ‘It’s accessible in the mornings, but right around like 4:30, 5 o’clock, it’s nearly impossible to find a parking spot,’ Johanson noted. She also pointed out that the requirement for parallel parking on one-way streets deters many drivers.

Riley Olson, a frequent visitor from Silvis, echoed these sentiments, describing the inconvenience of having to park several blocks away and walk to destinations. Despite these challenges, city officials, including Moline City Administrator Bob Vitas, argue that the issue may not be a lack of parking spaces. ‘We have over 45 acres of parking downtown, so it’s fair to say that we have more parking than we absolutely need to have,’ Vitas stated.

Potential Solutions

The city acknowledges that many parking lots remain underused, and the challenge lies in making these spaces more visible and accessible. Vitas suggested improvements in signage and digital accessibility, such as online maps and mobile apps, to help drivers locate available parking.

Johanson described the current parking situation as a ‘mystery’ and expressed a desire for more accessible parking options. Meanwhile, Olson and others suggested that some underused lots could be repurposed for development, enhancing the downtown area.

For those unable to attend the open house, the city has provided an online survey to gather further input from the community. This initiative underscores the importance of local engagement in shaping infrastructure decisions that impact daily life in Moline.
