Dolly Parton streams surge after her death, making her top global artist

When the beloved country singer Dolly Parton died on Tuesday, fans across the United States and around the world turned to her music in record numbers. Data from Luminate, the industry analytics firm, shows a staggering 2,458% increase in audio and video streams of her catalog on the day of her death compared with the previous Monday.

In the United States, streams rose from about 1.2 million on Monday to 30.5 million on Tuesday, and climbed further to 46.3 million by Wednesday. Worldwide, the surge was equally dramatic, with streams jumping from 2.5 million to 41.8 million on Tuesday, a 1,549% increase.

Top‑ten songs drive the surge

The ten tracks that led the streaming charge illustrate the breadth of Parton’s impact:

  • “Jolene” – from roughly 196,200 streams on Monday to 3.3 million on Tuesday and 4 million on Wednesday.
  • “9 to 5” – grew from 208,600 to 3 million then 3.6 million.
  • “Islands in the Stream” (duet with the late Kenny Rogers) – rose from 165,900 to 2.1 million and 2.9 million.
  • “I Will Always Love You” – increased from 64,900 to 2 million and 2.8 million.
  • “Here You Come Again” – climbed from 48,700 to 1.5 million and 2.1 million.
  • “Coat of Many Colors” – went from 28,900 to 1.3 million and 1.9 million.
  • “Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That?” – rose from 22,100 to 827,000 and 1.3 million.
  • “There Was Jesus” (duet with Zach Williams) – grew from 85,200 to 635,100 and 682,000.
  • “My Tennessee Mountain Home” – increased from 5,800 to 562,300 and 1.1 million.
  • “Tyrant” (collaboration with Beyoncé) – jumped from 47,800 to 559,200 and 755,500.

These numbers made Parton the most streamed artist globally on Wednesday, with on‑demand audio streams reaching 79.7 million.

Books and legacy

Interest in Parton’s life and work extended beyond music. Sales of her memoir “Dolly Parton, Songteller,” the lyric collection “My Life in Lyrics,” and a picture book based on “Coat of Many Colors” all surged. As of early Friday, three of her books were among the top five best‑sellers on Amazon.com.

Parton’s influence spanned generations, reflecting her roles as a songwriter, philanthropist, and outspoken Christian who emphasized acceptance. Her legacy continues to inspire listeners and readers alike, underscoring the power of music to unite people in moments of collective mourning and celebration.

For those who want a curated listening experience, the Associated Press has compiled an official playlist that showcases Parton’s diverse catalog, from country classics that challenged traditional gender norms to timeless ballads that have become part of the cultural fabric.
