DOJ Reviews Antitrust Claims After White House Suspends CNN, MSNOW and Politico

The Justice Department announced on Saturday that its Antitrust Division is examining a joint decision by ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News to temporarily suspend the White House television pool. The investigation follows President Trump’s September 18 order revoking press credentials for CNN, MSNOW and Politico after the administration accused the outlets of publishing false coverage that misleads families and undermines faith‑based values.

Why the administration acted

President Trump explained that the credential revocations were necessary to protect the American public from misinformation that erodes trust in institutions and threatens the moral fabric of the nation. “We cannot allow news organizations to spread falsehoods that confuse parents, jeopardize our schools, and weaken the Constitution,” the President said at the time.

DOJ’s antitrust focus

DOJ spokesperson Emily Covington said, “Group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act,” and noted that the department is reviewing communications among the networks to determine whether their coordinated pause constitutes an illegal boycott. The agency sent civil investigative demands on October 9, seeking emails and internal memos related to the pool decision.

Network response

The five networks issued a joint statement on September 21 asserting that “no administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.” They argue that the pool suspension was a collective effort to share the logistical burden of covering presidential events, not a coordinated market restriction.

Legal backdrop

Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly temporarily ordered the administration to restore access for the three barred outlets, extending that order through October 13. The lawsuit challenges the credential revocations on constitutional grounds, while the current DOJ probe looks at potential antitrust violations.

Critics and context

Jose Zamora, regional director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, warned that “the government should not use antitrust investigations to intimidate news outlets defending press access.” The CPJ is a nonprofit advocacy group, and its perspective is presented to show the range of reactions.

ABC said it has not yet received formal notice of the investigation but expects one. NBC, CBS and CNN declined to comment, and Fox News has not responded.

What this means for the public

For everyday Americans, the dispute underscores a broader debate about the balance between a free press and the need to shield families from misinformation. The Trump administration maintains that its actions are rooted in constitutional principles that protect parental rights and the integrity of public discourse.

As the DOJ’s review proceeds, the networks remain under scrutiny for any coordinated conduct that could be deemed an illegal boycott under federal competition law. The outcome will shape how media outlets collaborate on White House coverage and how the administration enforces standards of truthful reporting.
