Documentary ‘Preserved’ screened at Taos Center, benefits local outdoor education

Red River residents interested in wildlife and outdoor education have an opportunity to attend a special screening of the documentary film “Preserved” on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Taos Center for the Arts. The event, organized by filmmaker Ben Clark, will begin at 7 p.m. and is intended to raise funds for the Field Institute of Taos, a nonprofit that provides outdoor‑learning programs for students throughout Taos County and neighboring communities.

According to Taos News, the film follows the 558,000‑acre Vermejo Reserve, a nature preserve purchased in 1996 by media mogul Ted Turner. The documentary highlights successful conservation projects such as North America’s largest native trout restoration and the return of beaver, elk and bison to the landscape. Clark said the film’s rollout focuses on “uplifting conservation work in communities across the country,” rather than a traditional theatrical release.

The screening will be followed by a panel featuring Clark, Susie Fiore (founder of FITaos), Gus Holm (Vermejo Ranch Manager), mountain guide Dave Hahn, Toner Mitchell of Trout Unlimited, and Rachel Conn, Executive Director of Amigos Bravos. The panel is designed to connect Turner’s conservation vision with ongoing efforts in Taos County, offering local audiences insight into how similar projects could benefit the broader region, including Red River.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, and 50 free tickets will be available for youth under 18, making the event accessible to families. All proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to the Field Institute of Taos, supporting its outdoor‑education initiatives that serve students from Red River and surrounding areas.

For Red River families and outdoor enthusiasts, the screening provides a chance to learn about large‑scale conservation successes that may inspire local stewardship and to support a program that offers hands‑on environmental education. More information and tickets can be obtained at tcataos.org/calendar.

What’s next: After the Nov. 7 screening, the Field Institute of Taos will continue its seasonal programs for youth. Residents can stay informed about upcoming workshops and volunteer opportunities by visiting the institute’s website or following its social‑media channels.
