A group of divers investigating a shipwreck off the coast of Dover found a bottle of Guinness, which scientists hope to use to re-brew the original flavor.
Discovery of the Bottle
Belgian Stefan Panis, 47, and Brit Eddie Huzzie, 68, from Dover, made the discovery while diving in the summer of last year. The Mindoro, which crashed during dense fog on November 27, 1864, was carrying around 24 bottles of Guinness on board.
Stefan, who has been diving for 40 years, said he noticed a certain bottle caught his eye. After taking it to the surface and rinsing it, the name ‘Guinness Extra Stout, London’ appeared.
Re-brewing the Original Flavor
Scientists are now attempting to recover the DNA of the yeast in an attempt to make a rebrew of the 1860s beer. The team plans to send the bottles to the university and the Guinness lab in the hope that a re-brew can take place, dubbed ‘Project Jurassic Beer.’
