On Wednesday morning at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay, a large video display board toppled onto a classroom, striking 5‑year‑old Bellamy Dawkins‑Morris. The 120‑pound monitor fell at approximately 11:36 a.m., seriously injuring the child. School staff called 911 and performed emergency lifesaving measures before Bellamy was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Family demands accountability
Bellamy’s great‑aunt, Miriam Rodriguez, told WESH 2 that the family is devastated and angry. “We’re expecting him to be safe. He didn’t return to us,” she said. “My emotions, my sadness has subsided, and I am angry. We need answers, and we need them immediately.”
The family says Bellamy, who was on the autism spectrum, was moving the display board back and forth while other students lined up. According to them, the monitor was not properly secured, allowing it to tip over. “He’s on the spectrum. When he sees things in motion, he’s gonna keep pushing it to keep it in motion. That’s just something that children on the spectrum do,” Rodriguez explained. “Obviously, the monitor was not secure, and that’s a huge issue. There is no reason it isn’t bolted to the wall.”
School and police response
Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell met with Bellamy’s family shortly after the tragedy. “We lost a life today, a precious young life. There are no words to describe that loss,” Rendell said, adding that he has spent more than three decades in education and feels the grief deeply.
Palm Bay Police Deputy Chief Nicholas Szczepanski confirmed that the department’s Special Victims Unit and Major Case Unit are investigating the incident. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to everybody that was involved in this tragic accident,” Szczepanski said.
Calls for safety review
Family members are pressing the district for answers about classroom supervision and the mounting of the display board. “This is not a slap on the wrist. This is not a broken leg. We lost our baby today because of this, and I need everybody to understand the severity of this,” Rodriguez said.
The school district released a statement expressing devastation and offering counseling and additional support services for students and staff in the coming days. The district has not yet responded to specific questions about whether the monitor was bolted or how supervision was managed at the time of the incident.
Community impact
The tragedy has sparked concern among Palm Bay parents about safety protocols in schools, especially for children with special needs. Local faith leaders have offered prayers and support for the Dawkins‑Morris family, emphasizing the importance of a safe learning environment for every child.
As investigators continue to examine the circumstances, the family is seeking legal counsel and hopes that their questions will lead to stronger safety measures to prevent future accidents.
