Disney’s live-action remake of ‘Moana’ has been released, and it’s a lackluster attempt at recreating the magic of the original animated film. The new version, starring Catherine Laga’aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui, is virtually a shot-by-shot, beat-by-beat redo of its predecessor.
A Lazy Remake
The remake’s laziness is evident in its poor production quality. The beach scenes are clearly green-screened, and the animals look fake. Even Dwayne Johnson’s wig is ridiculous. The film’s soundtrack, which replicates the original music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is also less captivating than the original.
In contrast, the original ‘Moana’ was vibrant, beautifully animated, and had a livelier cast of characters. The remake’s director, Thomas Kail, brings no creative vision to the film, relying too heavily on the source material. The result is a regurgitation of the original, with no added elements to separate it from the animated version.
Disney has had success with live-action remakes in the past, such as ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Jungle Book.’ However, this ‘Moana’ remake is a disappointment. It’s a lazy, uninspired attempt at cashing in on the success of the original.
