Dinner at Treva Was the Meal I Kept Describing for Weeks

What do you actually eat in Hartford when you want something that costs under fifteen dollars, fills you completely, and makes you think about it for days afterward?

I found my answer on Park Street, at Pho Tram, a Vietnamese restaurant that has been feeding this neighborhood quietly and consistently for years. It sits in a stretch of Park Street that most people outside Frog Hollow drive past without slowing down — a stretch that also happens to have some of the most interesting food in the city, if you know where to pull over.

My first visit was a Tuesday lunch, which I mention only because the place was already humming. Families, construction workers, a couple of college students with laptops shoved aside to make room for bowls. The room is simple — nothing precious about it, fluorescent lighting, laminated menus, a few decorative touches that feel personal rather than designed. Nobody is performing atmosphere. The focus is entirely on the food, and that’s exactly right.

The pho is the thing to start with, obviously. The broth is the real deal — deep, long-simmered, fragrant with star anise and charred ginger in a way that synthetic shortcuts cannot fake. I go with the pho tai, rare beef sliced thin, and I ask for the large. It comes with a plate of fresh basil, bean sprouts, sliced jalapeño, and a wedge of lime, and you build it the way you want it. On a cold Hartford afternoon, which describes roughly eight months of the year, there is almost nothing better.

But I would argue the banh mi deserves equal attention. Pho Tram’s version comes on bread that’s properly crusty — the kind that shatters slightly when you press it — and is stuffed generously with your choice of filling, pickled daikon and carrots, cucumber, cilantro, and jalapeño. The combination pork sandwich runs around five or six dollars and is one of the better lunch deals I’ve found in Hartford, full stop. Get two if you’re hungry.

I’ve also worked through the vermicelli bowls, the spring rolls (both fresh and fried, though the fresh ones are what I’d tell you to order), and a few of the rice plates. The lemongrass chicken is solid. The grilled pork over broken rice is the sleeper — quiet flavors that keep building as you eat.

Service is efficient and friendly in the way that means the staff actually wants you to have a good meal, not in the rehearsed hospitality sense. If you have a question about something on the menu, someone will answer it honestly.

Parking on Park Street can be a little tight depending on the hour, but there’s usually street parking within a block or two, and the walk is worth it. Budget around ten to fifteen dollars a person, maybe a few more if you add an iced coffee — the Vietnamese iced coffee here, sweet and strong over a glass of ice, is worth adding every time.

If you’ve been meaning to explore what Park Street actually has going on, Pho Tram is as good a starting point as any. It’s the kind of place that becomes a reflex — a restaurant you stop debating and just go to.
