Diego Morales Stands Firm in Indiana Secretary of State Race Amid GOP Leadership Shift

In a significant development within Indiana’s political landscape, Secretary of State Diego Morales has decided to remain in the Republican primary race for his position, despite losing endorsements from prominent GOP figures such as U.S. Senator Jim Banks and Attorney General Todd Rokita. Morales insists that the decision of who should be the Republican nominee should rest with the state convention delegates, not party insiders.

Shift in GOP Support

Senator Banks and Attorney General Rokita announced their withdrawal of support for Morales, expressing concerns about his ability to win the upcoming November election. They have thrown their support behind Max Engling, a senior adviser in Banks’ Senate office, who officially entered the race. Rokita emphasized the importance of the Secretary of State’s office in safeguarding it from what he described as ‘out-of-touch, left-wing Democrats.’ He urged Morales to suspend his campaign, citing various controversies that have plagued Morales’ tenure.

Banks, who had previously endorsed Morales, stated that Engling now has his ‘full and total support,’ praising Engling as a strong conservative who will prioritize election security and support Indiana’s small businesses and farmers.

Other Candidates and Controversies

Besides Morales and Engling, Knox County Clerk David Shelton and conservative activist Jamie Reitenour have also qualified for the GOP convention ballot set for June 20. Shelton criticized the last-minute support for Engling, highlighting his own long-term campaign efforts across Indiana.

Morales’ first term has been under scrutiny due to issues related to a taxpayer-funded vehicle, international travel, and contracting decisions, which he defended as necessary for election security and promoting Indiana businesses. Additionally, allegations surfaced regarding a former staffer who allegedly registered to vote illegally, which further fueled Banks’ decision to withdraw his endorsement.

Democratic candidate Beau Bayh’s campaign manager, Jack Tormoehlen, commented on the situation, suggesting that Republicans tolerated Morales’ conduct until concerns about his electability arose, leading to the current shift in support.
