The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has thwarted Iranian terrorist threats at the northern border, with some of these threats connected to the World Cup and the Iranian National Guard Corps (IRGC).
IRGC Ties to World Cup Team
DHS Secretary MarkWayne Mullin stated that Border Patrol agents have seen an unusual number of Iranian nationals trying to sneak into the US through the northern border, with many having direct ties to the IRGC.
Mullin also mentioned that federal officials have identified IRGC ties to the Iranian World Cup team, specifically among support staff. The US granted visas to 53 Iranians, but those with direct ties to the IRGC were not admitted.
Security Concerns
A Canadian member of Parliament warned in March that there are at least 700 IRGC members living in Canada, posing a national security threat. Some of these individuals have been involved in violent activities, including kidnappings and potential murders.
The IRGC is known for supporting terrorism and militant groups, and its members have been involved in terrorist acts in various countries, including Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.
The apprehensions of Iranian nationals at the northern border come after the greatest number of known or suspected terrorists were apprehended during the Biden administration.
