DHS data on alleged illegal‑immigrant voters remains preliminary, Nevada officials say

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced last month that the department had identified 250,000 illegal immigrants registered to vote in four states. The claim was presented as proof of President Donald Trump’s long‑standing allegations of widespread non‑citizen voting.

Nevada’s review shows limited verification

In Nevada, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initially reported 15,903 illegal‑immigrant registrations. However, a meeting with state election officials on August 13 revealed that only 185 of those names have been confirmed through manual review. More than 14,000 cases remain unresolved, including 6,200 labeled as “higher confidence matches.” Even those higher‑confidence cases may include naturalized citizens whose immigration records have not been updated.

Chief deputy C. Murphy Hebert of the Nevada secretary of state’s office asked whether the 15,903 figure had been vetted. DHS fraud‑division leader Kimberley Vogt responded that the list had not undergone a full manual review of each entry, noting that the department was still working to reduce the number as reviews continue.

State officials caution against disenfranchisement

Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar warned that the state would not risk disenfranchising eligible voters without “the highest confidence” of ineligibility. He emphasized the constitutional right to vote and the need for accurate data before any action is taken.

DHS has sent voter ID numbers for the 6,200 higher‑confidence matches to Nevada officials, asking the state to investigate and remove any ineligible voters before the midterm elections. Nevada officials say the information provided is insufficient for verification at this stage.

Broader context of the administration’s voting‑integrity push

The DHS effort is part of a larger federal push to tighten voting rules, including the SAVE America Act, which would require identification at the polls and proof of citizenship to register. The administration has also threatened to withhold homeland‑security grants from states that reject these measures and has supported lawsuits seeking unredacted voter rolls.

Former senior Census Bureau officials have criticized a recent Census analysis that claimed 24,000 illegal immigrants voted in the 2020 election, questioning its methodology and potential political bias.

What this means for voters

While the federal government continues to promote the data as evidence of voter fraud, state officials stress the importance of thorough, accurate verification to protect both election integrity and the constitutional right to vote. The ongoing review in Nevada highlights the challenges of matching immigration records with voter rolls and underscores the need for careful, evidence‑based action before any changes to voting procedures are implemented.
