Dallas‑Fort Worth International Airport is gearing up for one of its busiest Labor Day periods on record. Officials project roughly 1.4 million travelers will pass through the hub between Sept. 3 and Sept. 8, a 7% increase over the same holiday stretch last year.
Peak travel days and destinations
Friday is expected to be a high‑traffic day with about 250,000 passengers, while Labor Day itself should see the busiest flow—more than 256,000 travelers. Popular domestic destinations include Seattle, Anchorage and Vancouver, which serve as gateways to Alaska cruises, as well as Denver, Las Vegas, and the national parks of Zion, Arches and the Grand Canyon. Historic and cultural cities such as New York, Chicago and Boston remain top choices, and international hotspots like Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin and Rome continue to attract American vacationers.
Higher costs but steady demand
Travelers are facing steeper costs. AAA data shows the average round‑trip domestic airfare for the holiday is about $750, roughly 2% higher than last year, with some routes nearing $800—a 20% jump from 2025. AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz noted the price increase adds up quickly, especially when combined with higher gasoline prices.
In Texas, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline rose to $3.69 per gallon, up $0.06 from the previous week and $0.92 from a year ago. Doug Shupe, corporate communications manager for AAA Texas, estimates Texans will spend $15‑$20 more for a full tank compared with the same period last year.
Tips for travelers
AAA advises motorists to avoid peak congestion, particularly Friday afternoons between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and warns that Monday traffic will be heavy as travelers return home. DFW officials recommend arriving at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures, allowing extra time for road traffic, parking and security screening. Passengers should also check real‑time parking availability, security wait times and terminal traffic updates before heading to the airport.
