Jim Irwin, a 47-year-old developer, is one of the most respected developers in Atlanta. He is known for creating spaces and places where people want to visit, live, and work. Irwin’s motto is “Let’s build a city I’d want to live in.”

Early Life and Career

Irwin was an English major and football player at Dartmouth College. He then served as a legislative aide to the late U.S. Sen. Paul Coverdell and U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm. Gramm advised Irwin to return to Atlanta to get his business degree.

Irwin returned to Atlanta and got an MBA from the Goizueta Business School at Emory University. His in-laws, who were architects, suggested that he consider a career in real estate. Irwin began working with Hal Barry and Chris Schoen while finishing his business degree.

Development Projects

One of Irwin’s notable projects was the development of Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He suggested sinking the field rather than going vertical, which allowed the stadium to remain open and accessible to the community when baseball games weren’t taking place.

Irwin also led the development of Ponce City Market, where he helped negotiate 48 different contracts and closed the deal in July 2011. He founded New City Properties in 2016 and acquired property along the Beltline. His projects include 725 Ponce, the Overline Residences, and the FORTH hotel.

Irwin’s approach to development is centered around creating connections with the nearby surroundings and having a positive impact on the community. He believes that quality design will eventually bring a financial return and is committed to involving the community in his projects.

Future Plans

Irwin has three more projects to develop along the Beltline, including one office tower and two apartment towers. New City is also branching out to other Southern cities, including Nashville and Chattanooga.
