Detroit’s Shinola Hotel: Where Craft, Cool, and City Pride Sleep Under One Roof

There are hotels you stay in, and then there are hotels that make you fall in love with a city all over again. The Shinola Hotel, anchored in the heart of downtown Detroit at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Grand River, is firmly in the second category. From the moment you step through its doors, you understand that this place was built not just to house visitors, but to tell Detroit’s story — and to tell it beautifully.

Opened in 2019, the Shinola Hotel is a collaboration between the beloved Detroit-born Shinola brand — famous for its handcrafted watches, leather goods, and bicycles — and hospitality group Signal Theory. The result is 129 rooms and suites spread across two connected historic buildings: the T.B. Rayl Co. building and an adjacent structure that dates back to the early 1900s. Walking the hallways feels like moving through a love letter to American craftsmanship. Custom Shinola furnishings, locally sourced art, hand-stitched leather headboards, and fixtures that feel like they were chosen one by one (because they were) fill every corner. Nothing here is generic, nothing feels like it was pulled from a supply catalog. Every detail has intention behind it.

The rooms themselves strike that rare balance between luxurious and genuinely livable. Wide windows pull in natural light and frame views of a city that is unmistakably, defiantly alive. The beds are the kind you have to convince yourself to leave in the morning. Bathrooms feature deep soaking tubs and products from local makers that you’ll want to track down before you check out.

But the Shinola Hotel is more than just a place to rest your head. The ground floor is a destination all on its own. San Morello, the hotel’s flagship Italian-inspired restaurant, draws both guests and locals with its wood-fired dishes and an atmosphere that manages to feel simultaneously sophisticated and completely relaxed. The Brakeman, a casual beer hall tucked just off the lobby, serves straightforward, excellent food alongside a rotating draft list that leans heavily on Michigan craft breweries. On a good night, it buzzes with the energy of a neighborhood gathering place rather than a hotel bar — which is exactly the point.

What makes the Shinola Hotel truly special, though, is how deeply Detroit it feels. This is not a chain hotel that could exist in any American city. The art on the walls came from Detroit artists. The products in the gift shop are made in Detroit. The staff carry a pride in their city that is palpable and infectious. Spend one evening here talking to the bartender at the Brakeman or browsing the Shinola retail space just off the lobby, and you will leave wanting to know more about this city — which, of course, is precisely what great travel experiences are supposed to do.

Whether you are making Detroit your destination or passing through, the Shinola Hotel earns its place as one of the finest reasons to linger a little longer. Book a room, order a Negroni at San Morello, and let Detroit surprise you. It will.
