DETROIT — In a ceremony held Friday, the Detroit Fire Department officially welcomed 27 new firefighters after they completed academy training, probationary assignments, and earned their badges. The event highlighted the city’s commitment to public safety and the dedication of those who will protect Detroiters in emergencies.
Mayor and officials praise the new recruits
Mayor Mary Sheffield addressed the crowd, noting, “Every new firefighter represents an investment in the safety and future of our city. These 27 men and women have made a commitment to serve Detroiters during some of their most difficult moments, and that responsibility is one we — as a city — take seriously.” She added that her administration will continue to support the men and women who safeguard residents and visitors.
Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms also spoke, emphasizing the significance of the badge. “Receiving that badge is something every firefighter remembers. It represents all the work that went into getting here, but it also marks the beginning of a lifelong commitment to the people you serve alongside and the community that depends on you,” Simms said.
Training and probationary evaluation
The new firefighters belong to Training Class 90. Throughout their probationary period, they were evaluated by Battalion Chiefs and company officers who monitored performance, development, and teamwork. Their recommendations for badge awards reflected sound judgment, dependability, and the ability to work effectively as part of an operational team.
Chief of the Detroit Fire Department, David Nelson, highlighted the importance of field experience. “The academy gives you the foundation, but working in the field is where you begin to put everything together,” he explained. “When you walk into a firehouse, your brothers and sisters need to know they can count on you. Today, these members have taken an important step in earning that trust.”
Training Division chief acknowledges the effort
Chief Jamal Mickles, who oversees the department’s Training Division, praised the perseverance required to move from recruit to fully assigned firefighter. “There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into preparing someone for a career in the fire service, and that development doesn’t stop when they graduate from the academy,” Mickles said. “Seeing them reach this point and officially earn their badges is incredibly rewarding. They should take pride in what they’ve accomplished and carry that same commitment with them throughout their careers.”
Looking ahead
The newly badge‑ed firefighters will now join their respective fire companies, building relationships with veteran crew members and responding to calls across the city. Their presence strengthens Detroit’s fire protection capabilities and underscores the city’s focus on safeguarding families, neighborhoods, and businesses.
City officials and community leaders expressed confidence that the new recruits will uphold the high standards of the Detroit Fire Department and contribute to a safer, more resilient Detroit.
