Former HGTV host Nicole Curtis is being sued by the City of Detroit for failing to maintain and restore a blighted house in the city. The civil nuisance-abatement lawsuit alleges the property has continued to be a public nuisance despite Curtis and her company receiving multiple code violations and a 2021 court order requiring the home’s renovation.
Background
Curtis obtained ownership of the property in 2021 after litigation with the Detroit Land Bank Authority. At that time, Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny deemed the 1921 American foursquare-style home a danger to the community and ordered it to be refurbished.
Since then, the city has cited the owner for failing to repair or replace damaged, defective, and missing exterior features, as well as failing to repair the roof and gutters, among several other violations. Overall, the city claims the property has never been brought into compliance, causing it to further deteriorate.
Curtis was fired by HGTV in February after video surfaced of her uttering a racial slur while filming her show. She has apologized for the remark and expressed remorse and regret.
