Detroit Primary Heats Up

A primary challenge is brewing in Detroit’s 13th Congressional District as State Rep. Donavan McKinney, a 34-year-old Black Detroit native, takes on Rep. Shri Thanedar. McKinney’s campaign is focused on affordability and improving the economics for people in his community.

Thanedar’s Record

Thanedar, 71, has been criticized for introducing bills that won’t gain support to pass, including a bill to impeach President Donald Trump. He has also faced scrutiny over his business dealings and has spent $930,000 of taxpayer dollars on ads to promote himself.

McKinney has raised $1 million and has spent more money than any of his opponents so far. About half of the contributions to his campaign are $200 or under. Thanedar, on the other hand, has $5 million in cash on hand, with 60% of his donations coming from large donations of $2,000 or higher.

McKinney has pledged to reject corporate PAC money for the rest of his political career, while Thanedar has received money from pro-Israel donors and corporate PACs associated with DTE Energy, Honeywell International, and General Dynamics.
