Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta’s hip injury puts Week 1 debut in doubt

Detroit – The Lions’ coaching staff announced Thursday that tight end Sam LaPorta will miss the team’s first practice as they prepare for the season‑opening game on September 13. Head coach Dan Campbell said the club is taking a cautious approach after LaPorta experienced a flare‑up of a hip injury sustained in a recent collision.

Injury details and recovery plan

Campbell explained that the injury “flared up a little bit, it’s a little aggravated,” but emphasized that the organization remains optimistic about LaPorta’s long‑term health. “We’ll just rest him for a little bit here, let it calm down,” the coach added. The exact nature of the hip issue was not disclosed, but the team’s medical staff will continue monitoring his condition throughout the preseason.

Uncertainty about regular‑season availability

When asked whether the injury could linger into the regular season, Campbell was non‑committal. “I don’t know,” he said. “I feel like we’ll be OK, but I don’t know.” The uncertainty leaves Detroit fans waiting to see if LaPorta, a key component of the Lions’ passing attack, will suit up for the opening matchup against the visiting New Orleans Saints.

LaPorta’s recent production

LaPorta, 25, entered the 2025 season after a promising rookie year that earned him a Pro Bowl nod in 2023. In nine games last season, he logged 40 receptions for 489 yards and three touchdowns before a back injury ended his campaign. Over his first three seasons, LaPorta has amassed 186 catches for 2,104 yards and 20 touchdowns in 42 career games, 39 of which he started.

What the Lions need from LaPorta

The tight end’s size, route‑running ability, and reliable hands have made him a favorite target for quarterback Jared Goff. Losing LaPorta for even a few weeks could force the Lions to rely more heavily on younger players and adjust their offensive scheme early in the season. The team’s depth chart lists several backup tight ends, but none have matched LaPorta’s production at the professional level.

Upcoming schedule

The Lions open their 2026 campaign on September 13 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where they will face the New Orleans Saints. The game will be the first opportunity for Detroit fans to see how the team’s offense performs without LaPorta, should his injury linger.

Looking ahead

Campbell reiterated that the Lions are “good long term about him,” suggesting that the organization expects a full recovery once the hip settles. Fans will receive updates as the preseason progresses and the medical staff provides further guidance on LaPorta’s status.
