Detroit Leaders Rally Behind Abdul El‑Sayed as He Courts Black Voters in Senate Race

Detroit’s most influential Black community leaders gathered Monday to publicly endorse Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul El‑Sayed. The event, held in the city’s downtown district, featured city officials, labor heads and faith leaders who praised El‑Sayed’s work as Detroit’s former health director and his commitment to public‑health, education and voting‑rights issues that matter to residents.

Local endorsements highlight El‑Sayed’s record

Detroit Federation of Teachers President LaKeisha Wilson‑Lumpkins highlighted El‑Sayed’s efforts to expand vision‑care access for students, calling his record “a clear sign of a leader who puts children first.” City Council President James Tate, who worked alongside El‑Sayed in municipal government, said the endorsement was based on personal experience rather than campaign advertising. “I didn’t learn about Dr. El‑Sayed from a television commercial,” Tate told the crowd, adding that El‑Sayed “created an entire agenda” for housing, infrastructure and voting‑rights priorities.

El‑Sayed, a former health director and physician, pledged to fight for better schools, affordable housing, clean air and water, and greater economic opportunity if elected. He warned that Detroit has often been “short‑changed by state and federal leaders,” insisting the city “deserves more” than the neglect it has faced.

Trump backs Republican opponent

President Trump, who carried Michigan in the 2024 election, campaigned a day earlier in Port Huron for Republican Senate candidate Rep. Mike Rogers. Trump warned that a victory for El‑Sayed and the Democratic ticket would “open the floodgates and invite hordes of jihadis to our shores,” framing the race as a matter of national security. Rogers echoed the President’s concerns on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” labeling El‑Sayed a “Democrat‑Socialist‑of‑America‑aligned candidate” with “radical support groups that don’t like America.”

El‑Sayed responded by accusing his opponents of deflecting from everyday concerns such as gas prices, grocery costs and school quality. “When you don’t want to talk about gas and groceries and seeing a doctor, you just start making deflections and deceptions based on no evidence,” he said.

Faith leaders join the conversation

El‑Sayed also appeared with former President Barack Obama over the weekend and with Sen. Raphael Warnock, senior pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, underscoring his ties to prominent Black faith figures. The presence of these national leaders was meant to reinforce El‑Sayed’s connection to the community’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

What the race means for Michigan

The Senate contest is shaping up as a pivotal test of Michigan’s political direction. While the state voted for President Trump two years ago, the race remains tightly contested, with El‑Sayed’s progressive platform—including support for Medicare for All and a reshaped U.S.–Israel relationship—clashing with Rogers’ conservative stance and the Trump administration’s record on trade, energy and national security.

Local voters will weigh El‑Sayed’s municipal achievements against the broader national debate over the future of the Republican‑led administration. As the campaign enters its final stretch, Detroit’s community leaders hope their endorsements will sway the Black electorate, a key constituency in a state that could determine Senate control.
