Detroit honors fallen firefighter Sgt. Sivad Johnson with permanent Belle Isle plaque

Detroit families and city officials gathered on Belle Isle this week to unveil a permanent memorial plaque honoring Sgt. Sivad Johnson, a 26‑year veteran of the Detroit Fire Department who died while rescuing three young girls from the water in 2020.

Tragic heroism remembered

Johnson was at the beach with his 10‑year‑old daughter, Hayden, when he saw the three girls struggling to stay afloat. He entered the water to pull them to safety, succeeding in saving the children but losing his own life in the process. The plaque, placed at the exact spot where the rescue took place, serves as a lasting reminder of his self‑less act.

“It shows that the city still cares and doesn’t just let things happen and move on,” Hayden Johnson told reporters. “We don’t get to forget, and it doesn’t just go away every year for us.”

Family and city leaders speak

Family members expressed deep gratitude for the community’s support. Jamal Johnson, a relative, said, “This was a man of integrity and discipline.” Bill Johnson, the firefighter’s father, added, “We will miss him for the rest of my life. Thank you all for coming out to honor my son.”

Executive Fire Commissioner Charles Simms described the loss as “tremendous” for the department, noting that Johnson was not only an experienced officer but also a respected colleague and brother. Deputy Commissioner Robert Stokes echoed the sentiment, saying the plaque ensures the department will never forget Johnson’s service.

Mayor’s tribute

Mayor Mike Sheffield addressed the crowd, emphasizing the broader meaning of the memorial. “May this plaque stand as a permanent reminder that true heroism is measured not by what we say, but by what we’re willing to do for others,” he said. “Sgt. Johnson gave everything, and Detroit will never forget him and his service.”

During the ceremony, the fire boat named after Johnson returned to the water, allowing Hayden to step aboard—a symbolic gesture linking the past rescue to the present honor.

Community impact

The memorial has resonated with Detroit residents, many of whom see Johnson’s story as an embodiment of the city’s resilience and commitment to public safety. Local churches and civic groups have pledged to keep his memory alive through annual remembrance events and youth safety programs.

While the tragedy remains a heavy loss for the Johnson family, the city’s dedication to preserving his legacy underscores the value placed on sacrifice, service, and the bonds that hold neighborhoods together.
