Detroit high school students share their classroom experiences

Detroit – A group of local high school students gathered at the Skillman Foundation headquarters for a candid discussion about their day‑to‑day learning experiences. The conversation was moderated by Dr. Omar Hakim, Vice President of Education for Detroit PBS, and was recorded for the American Black Journal.

Students speak up on what matters

Participants highlighted both strengths and challenges they encounter in Detroit Public Schools Community District classrooms. Many praised teachers who take the time to connect lessons to real‑world applications and who respect students’ family values. Others pointed out gaps in resources, such as outdated textbooks and limited access to advanced coursework, which they say can hinder preparation for college and careers.

Calls for change

When asked what they would like to see improved, students emphasized the need for more parental involvement opportunities, stronger mentorship programs, and curricula that reflect the cultural heritage of Detroit’s diverse neighborhoods. Several voiced a desire for greater emphasis on vocational training, noting that hands‑on pathways can help families achieve economic stability.

Faith and family at the center

Many of the students referenced the role of faith and family in shaping their educational goals. They expressed appreciation for schools that honor religious traditions and support parental rights to be involved in curriculum decisions. The dialogue underscored how a supportive school environment can reinforce the values taught at home.

Looking ahead

Overall, the students conveyed optimism that their voices will be heard by school leaders and policymakers. They hope the conversation will inspire concrete actions, such as expanding after‑school tutoring, updating technology in classrooms, and creating more channels for families to provide input on school policies.

Dr. Hakim concluded the session by thanking the students for their honesty and encouraging community members to continue the conversation, emphasizing that lasting improvement requires collaboration among educators, parents, faith leaders, and local officials.
