Detroit area hosts multiple September 11 memorial services on 25th anniversary

Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of thousands of Americans, including 42 individuals with close ties to Michigan. Across metro Detroit, a slate of free public ceremonies will allow families, first‑responders, and citizens to honor the fallen and reflect on the nation’s resilience.

Lakefront service at the historic Alger House

At 8:30 a.m., the lakefront lawn of the Alger House at The War Memorial in Grosse Pointe Farms will host a remembrance service. Organizers have asked attendees to pre‑register online. The ceremony will feature prayers, musical tributes, and a moment of silence timed to the first plane’s impact at 8:46 a.m.

Department of Homeland Security memorial with flyover

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Detroit components will hold a memorial ceremony beginning promptly at 8:46 a.m., mirroring the exact moment the first aircraft struck the World Trade Center. The event will be supported by DHS air and marine assets, including a coordinated flyover to honor the victims.

Keynote by 9/11 survivor Patrick Anderson

Patrick Anderson, a survivor of the attacks and founder of the Michigan Remembers 9‑11 Fund, will deliver the keynote address at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base. His remarks are expected to focus on personal loss, community healing, and the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by first‑responders.

Local first‑responders’ observance

Firefighters and police officers will gather outside Fire Station No. 1 on North Fifth Avenue for a special observance beginning at 9 a.m. The ceremony will be livestreamed on the city’s Facebook page, allowing residents to join remotely.

Holly fire department tribute

In Holly, a tribute to the 343 members of the New York Fire Department who perished on September 11 will be held outside the Holly Fire Department at 414 N. Saginaw St. Activities will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring a moment of silence and a reading of the victims’ names.

National events and presidential participation

Vice President JD Vance is expected to attend the annual Ground Zero ceremony in New York City. The 25th‑anniversary commemoration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the first moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. Family members will read the names of those killed in the September 11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, followed by seven moments of silence marking each tragic event.

President Donald Trump is slated to commemorate the anniversary at the Pentagon, with a service beginning at 9 a.m. The presidential remarks are anticipated to underscore the nation’s enduring strength and the importance of defending liberty.

Flight 93 National Memorial observance

In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the Flight 93 National Memorial will host a full day of programs, including a morning observance and an afternoon ceremony at the Memorial Plaza near the Wall of Names. The observance starts at 8:30 a.m. with a wreath‑laying ceremony.

How to watch live

FOX 2 will provide live coverage of several Detroit‑area events throughout the morning. Viewers can check the station’s website for streaming links and updates on additional ceremonies as they are announced.

These events offer Detroit residents a chance to come together in solemn remembrance, honoring both local heroes and the broader national sacrifice made on that fateful day.
