DeSoto, Texas – Tatum Williams is searching for answers after her 9‑year‑old son, Braxton, who has autism, left Meadows Elementary on a school bus he was never supposed to ride. The incident, which occurred on September 11, prompted a police report and an internal investigation by DeSoto Independent School District.
What happened
According to Williams, Braxton’s father arrived at Meadows Elementary for a routine after‑school pickup on Friday, Sept. 11. Attendants in the line told him that Braxton was not present. Williams said the child may have been picked up by another parent or could have slipped away from the school unnoticed.
Forty‑five minutes later the family learned that Braxton had boarded a school bus. The bus completed its route and returned him to the school about an hour after that.
Mother’s concerns
Williams, who says Braxton’s autism can make it difficult for him to explain events, expressed the emotional toll of the incident: “It was undescribable. I still have that feeling right now talking about it. I wouldn’t wish that on any parent in the world.”
She filed a report with DeSoto police, who confirmed that the district is conducting an internal investigation. Williams wants to review video footage showing Braxton leaving the school, saying, “If I’m able to view that, that’s giving me the tool as a parent to be able to set him up as an autistic child to maneuver on his own. I can’t trust adults in this situation.”
Calls for safeguards
Williams emphasized the need for stronger safeguards for children who cannot advocate for themselves. “What are our steps moving forward to ensure that this does not happen to not only my child, but another child that might be in a similar situation that cannot advocate for themselves,” she asked.
She also wants to ensure that other children receiving special‑education services are protected from similar errors.
District response
DeSoto ISD has not yet provided a detailed public statement. NBC 5 reached out for comment and is awaiting a response.
The incident highlights the challenges schools face in tracking students with special needs and the importance of clear communication between parents, staff, and transportation personnel.
Next steps
Police and district officials continue to investigate how Braxton was placed on the bus and why the error was not caught earlier. Williams hopes that the investigation will lead to concrete policy changes to prevent future occurrences.
