The Deschutes County Road Department is implementing a project to install 24 digital speed signs across eight roads in the county. These solar-powered signs display vehicle speeds alongside the posted speed limit, serving as reminders to drivers to slow down.
Project Details
The initiative is part of a larger effort to remind drivers of speed limits in locations where motorists may exceed safe speeds. According to Deschutes County Road Department Director Chris Doty, people often request these types of signs to be installed in their neighborhoods because they are effective in reducing speeds. Doty stated that the signs typically result in a 2 to 7 mile per hour reduction in corridor speed, making them a proven safety countermeasure.
The project is funded by a grant totaling $1,032,873. The 24 digital speed signs will be installed on various roads across the county, including Alfalfa Market Road, Burgess Road, Cline Falls Highway, and others.
