As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, a local man in Ocala, Florida, is sharing his family’s history with the nation’s first flag. The man is a descendant of Captain Abraham Markoe, creator of the Markoe Standard, the flag of the Philadelphia Troop of Light Horse.
A Symbol of Independence
Many Philadelphians consider the Markoe Standard one of the first flags to symbolize America’s fight for independence from British rule. Created in the fall of 1775, the flag was carried alongside General George Washington during the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, and Yorktown.
