Des Moines is giving families a chance to declutter and safely dispose of unwanted items at the city’s final mega‑scrub event of the year. The free cleanup will take place Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bell Avenue Business Center.
What you can bring
The city will accept a wide range of items, including household hazardous waste such as paint, batteries, pesticides and cleaning chemicals; electronic devices like computers, televisions and phones; documents that need shredding; and bulk items such as furniture, mattresses and appliances. All items must be for personal, non‑commercial use.
How to participate
To use the service, residents must show proof of Des Moines residency – a driver’s license, utility bill or other government‑issued ID with a Des Moines address will suffice. The event is open to anyone living in the city, and there is no charge for any of the accepted materials.
Additional locations
For those who cannot travel to Bell Avenue, smaller scrub events will be held at the Metro Central Transfer Station and its Compost Center. Exact times and locations will be posted on the city’s website.
