National Night Out in Des Moines brought residents and law enforcement together to break down barriers, build trust, and improve communication. The event, which took place in over a dozen neighborhoods, featured police dog demonstrations, armored vehicle displays, and opportunities for residents to interact with officers.

Building Trust

Lt. Shane Grego of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the event’s purpose goes beyond the flashy displays. He explained that fear or misconceptions about law enforcement can sometimes prevent people from seeking help. The event aimed to show the reality of law enforcement work and provide a chance for residents to meet and talk to officers.

Elizabeth Williams of the Watrous Heights Neighborhood Association noted that the event was an opportunity for residents to meet their neighbors and learn about available resources in their city. For law enforcement, the event was an opportunity to strengthen relationships with the community and build trust.
