Two separate crashes in Des Moines over the weekend injured five people, including a bicyclist. The first crash occurred early Sunday morning at Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Ingersoll Avenue. A Toyota 4-Runner driven by a 19-year-old male was traveling south at a high rate of speed and ran a red light, colliding with a Jeep Compass that was turning onto westbound Ingersoll Avenue.
Both vehicles caught fire following the collision. All three people involved were taken to the hospital with serious injuries and are recovering. Hours earlier, another crash happened at East First Street and Court Avenue shortly after 11:30 a.m. Saturday. A speeding SUV struck another vehicle in the intersection, pushing a second SUV into a 64-year-old bicyclist.
The bicyclist suffered serious injuries, while the other driver sustained minor injuries. Both victims are recovering. Police said 34-year-old Demetrius Patterson Carrington faces several charges, including second-offense operating while intoxicated (OWI) and driving while barred.
