St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and Student Center in Des Moines will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to water damage from its fire-suppression system. The Diocese of Des Moines reported that water flowed from the system for about 15 minutes on July 15, leaving nearly three inches of standing water throughout the building.
Investigation and Restoration
The cause of the activation is under investigation, and restoration crews removed the standing water the same day. However, the church expects significant losses and may need to remove all drywall. Insurance adjusters are still assessing the damage.
Sunday Mass has been moved to 10 a.m. at the Sussman Theater in Drake University’s Olmsted Center. Parish staff are also revising campus ministry plans as students return for the academic year.
