Des Moines approves Joppa tiny home village, groundbreaking set for Sept. 3

Des Moines officials gave final approval this month to a new affordable‑housing project spearheaded by the nonprofit Joppa. The organization will convert the former Chesterfield School property on Maury Street into a tiny‑home village, a model that blends cost‑effective living with a close‑knit community atmosphere.

Project details and purpose

The planned village will contain 54 tiny homes. Fifty of those units are earmarked for individuals and families experiencing housing insecurity, while the remaining four will house volunteers and staff who support the community. By offering compact, well‑designed homes, Joppa aims to provide a stable, dignified living environment for those who might otherwise face homelessness.

Groundbreaking ceremony

Joppa has scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for 2 p.m. on September 3 at the Maury Street site. The event is open to the public, though attendees must register in advance via the organization’s Facebook page. Community members, city representatives, and volunteers are expected to join the ceremony to mark the start of construction.

City involvement and local impact

The city’s approval reflects a broader commitment to addressing the affordable‑housing shortage in Des Moines. By repurposing the former school site, the municipality is making productive use of existing land while supporting a nonprofit that aligns with local values of family stability and personal responsibility. The project also underscores the city’s willingness to partner with faith‑based and community‑driven organizations that seek practical solutions to pressing social challenges.

Why tiny homes?

Tiny homes offer a lower‑cost entry point to homeownership or long‑term tenancy, reducing the financial burden on residents while preserving a sense of independence. For families and individuals in need, this model can provide a stepping stone toward greater economic stability, allowing them to focus on employment, education, and family life without the looming threat of unaffordable rent.

Next steps

Following the groundbreaking, construction crews will begin site preparation and the installation of essential utilities. Joppa expects to complete the village within the next year, after which the homes will be allocated to qualified applicants through a transparent selection process overseen by the nonprofit.

The initiative has been welcomed by local faith leaders and community advocates who see it as a tangible expression of stewardship and compassion. As the project moves forward, it will serve as a model for other Iowa cities seeking innovative, faith‑aligned approaches to affordable housing.
