Derby fire crews, aided by neighboring departments, rescued a driver early Monday morning after a tractor‑trailer collided with a stone wall on Derby Avenue, just outside St. Michael’s Church. First responders arrived at approximately 4:40 a.m., finding the cab heavily entrapped.

Storm Engine Company of Derby led the effort, while personnel from the Derby, Ansonia and Shelton fire departments joined the scene. Ansonia Rescue and Medical Services, Valley Emergency Medical Services and the Derby Police Department also provided support. Tracy’s Service Station contributed heavy‑duty recovery equipment to stabilize the truck during the operation.
Driver extricated and taken for care
Using hydraulic tools, rescuers spent about 45 minutes freeing the driver from the cab. Once extricated, the driver was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment. Officials said the extent of the injuries has not yet been disclosed.
