A person was shot by Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies in Moreno Valley, authorities said. The incident occurred when deputies responded to a report about someone experiencing a mental health crisis at a home.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, deputies arrived at the scene and spoke with the person who made the report outside, alongside a clinical therapist with the county’s Community Behavioral Assessment Team. During the conversation, the person believed to be experiencing the crisis came out of the home and pointed a gun at deputies, prompting them to shoot.
The individual was hit by gunfire and taken to a hospital in critical condition. No deputies were hurt. The investigation is ongoing, and the deputies involved will be placed on paid administrative leave.
