The Denver Immersive Repertory Theater (DIRT) in downtown Denver is facing eviction due to unpaid rent. The theater, which received a $400,000 low-interest loan from the city’s Downtown Development Authority, has been working on a renovation to create an immersive show experience.
Eviction Notice
The building’s owner, Fred Glick, stated that DIRT has failed to pay months of rent, totaling over $51,000. An eviction notice was served to the theater, giving them until July 22 to either file a written answer or attend a court hearing.
DIRT’s owners, Steve Wargo and Blair Russell, had hoped to open the 10,000-square-foot venue in March, with plans to sell 44,000 tickets in their first year. However, construction on the building is only about 65% complete, and the theater is now facing a $269,000 lawsuit over allegedly unpaid construction work.
The city’s investment in the project is at risk, as DIRT has 13 years to pay off the loan at a 3% interest rate. The outcome of the eviction notice and the lawsuit will determine the future of the theater and the city’s investment.
