Denver cancels planned 9/11 memorial flyover after community concerns

The Denver Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has called off a planned aerial tribute for the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The flyover, organized by United Airlines, was to feature a Boeing 777 accompanied by an F‑16 fighter jet from Buckley Air Force Base.

Reason for cancellation

OEM officials said the decision came after “concerns raised by members of the community.” They warned that the aircraft would be highly visible over parts of Denver and could generate a surge of emergency calls from worried citizens.

Impact on other remembrance events

United Airlines confirmed that its other scheduled remembrance activities will proceed as planned, though the flyover will no longer be part of the program.

Mayor’s response

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston noted that the city was not consulted about whether the flyover was a good idea, underscoring the importance of local input on public‑safety matters.

Community context

The cancellation reflects a broader effort by city officials to balance tribute events with public‑safety considerations, ensuring that commemorations do not overwhelm emergency services or cause undue alarm among residents.
