Denmark’s Ministry of Education has introduced emergency measures to combat AI cheating in high schools. As part of these measures, students will be required to verbally defend their written assignments, which will apply to all exams written at home.

The ministry is also calling on high schools to use tools to monitor students’ screens during exams and to use a firewall to filter the content they can access during exams and in class. Additionally, schools are encouraged to have students complete more assignments in school, under controlled environments, to make supervision easier.

Education Minister Magnus Heunicke stated that action is needed now to ensure that AI does not undermine students’ skills, academic abilities, and ability to think for themselves. Three upper secondary school organizations welcomed the moves but called for more long-term solutions due to the rapid pace of technological development.
