Dems Reshape Primary Calendar for 2028

The Democratic National Committee has approved a new primary calendar for the 2028 presidential election, making South Carolina the leadoff state on January 22, 2028. This change is intended to give candidates a better chance of winning the general election by testing their appeal to diverse communities across the country.

Early States

The new calendar includes Nevada on February 1, followed by New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan, and Virginia throughout February. This lineup is designed to force candidates to prove themselves in states with significant Black and Latino populations, as well as union members.

According to DNC Chairman Ken Martin, the primary calendar is crucial in determining the party’s chances of winning the general election. Martin stated that to win, candidates must be “battle-tested” in front of various communities throughout the country.

Strategic Importance

Party leaders believe that the new calendar will give candidates the best shot at winning back the White House after Republican President Donald Trump’s second term. They argue that candidates must be able to appeal to Black voters in the South, rural voters, and union members in key states.

Former presidential candidate Howard Dean, a former Vermont governor, supports the new calendar, saying that the included states are more representative of the country as a whole. Dean believes that the change will lead to a more diverse and representative group of candidates.

The new calendar also offers clustering opportunities, allowing candidates to visit multiple states in a single trip. For example, a swing to the West could include Nevada and New Mexico, with a potential fundraising stop in California.
