Some Democrats are disputing a message from Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano, claiming it contained misleading statements about the benefits of President Donald Trump’s tax law for Social Security recipients.
Details of the Dispute
Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Ron Wyden of Oregon, along with other Democratic colleagues, sent a letter to Bisignano stating that his message was partisan and misleading. The lawmakers argued that the tax deductions for seniors in the legislation should not be labeled as a tax cut.
A copy of Bisignano’s message shows that he wrote that some 35 million seniors received an average of $7,500 in tax relief under Trump’s legislation. The message also stated that the Trump administration is protecting and strengthening Social Security while providing world-class customer service.
Trump’s Signature Bill and Social Security Taxes
Trump’s signature bill does not directly affect Social Security taxes. However, it provides a temporary benefit for seniors’ income, including a $6,000 deduction phasing out above the $75,000 annual income level for single filers and a $12,000 deduction phasing out above $150,000 for couples. The deduction is set to expire in 2028.
