Democratic Primary in New Hampshire’s 1st District Remains Too Close to Call

New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District continues to see a razor‑thin race between two leading Democratic contenders. Stefany Shaheen, the daughter of retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, and Maura Sullivan, a former Obama‑era official, remain dead‑locked early Wednesday morning.

Background and Candidates

Both candidates are vying to keep the seat in Democratic hands after incumbent Rep. Chris Pappas announced his bid for the U.S. Senate last year. Pappas, who has represented the district since 2019, won his most recent reelection with 54.0% of the vote against Republican Russell Prescott.

Shaheen, a Portsmouth native, has served on the Portsmouth City Council, started a local business, and championed affordable health care and clean water. Her mother, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, publicly endorsed her daughter, praising her dedication to the district.

Sullivan brings a military background, having served in the Marines, and experience as an assistant secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs during the Obama administration. She also led a health‑technology firm in the private sector.

Fundraising and Early Results

Financial filings show Sullivan raised $3.6 million, outpacing Shaheen’s $2.4 million. Despite the fundraising gap, Shaheen led much of the night and closed Tuesday with an approximate 2 percent advantage.

Other Democratic hopefuls, including state legislator Carleigh Beriont, also entered the race. Beriont finished roughly ten points behind the two frontrunners but still captured about 20 percent of the vote.

Policy Priorities

Shaheen’s platform emphasizes Medicare for All, expanded tax credits for first‑time homebuyers, and reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Sullivan’s agenda focuses on curbing price gouging, strengthening the VA, opposing President Trump’s tariffs, and increasing federal investment in housing development.

Both candidates stress their commitment to serving the district’s families and veterans, underscoring the importance of local representation in Washington.

Looking Ahead

The Democratic primary will determine which candidate advances to the November 3 general election. With the race still too close to call, both campaigns are urging supporters to stay engaged as additional precinct results are reported.

Voters in the 1st District can expect continued updates as the count progresses, and both Shaheen and Sullivan have pledged to keep their constituents informed throughout the remainder of the contest.
