A senior House Democrat, Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., is warning his party to fight back against the growing socialist movement within the party. Suozzi compared the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to the House Freedom Caucus, a group on the rightmost flank of the House GOP, while denouncing the DSA’s use of the word ‘democratic’ in its name.
Suozzi’s Concerns
Suozzi expressed concerns that the DSA’s ideology is not aligned with the Democratic Party’s values. ‘I don’t ascribe to any of those ideas at all, and I think that there’s very little support for those ideas,’ he said. Suozzi also stated that the Democratic Party should be fighting against the DSA’s use of the word ‘democratic’ in its name, implying that the DSA’s ideals are mostly socialist in nature.
Suozzi’s warning comes as DSA-linked candidates are making significant inroads in primary elections across the country, even defeating incumbent House progressives in New York and Colorado. Republicans are working to capitalize on a burgeoning civil war within the party, with Suozzi warning fellow Democrats to take the perception of a DSA takeover seriously.
A Call to Action
Suozzi is urging Democrats to take action against the socialist movement, rather than simply dismissing it. ‘I try not to waste my time on worry. I try to take action. So I just say very clearly, ‘That’s not me and that’s not us, and this is why that’s not us, and that’s why this is not me.’ And I fight back against it,’ he said. Suozzi has started a pledge called The Promise to America, which aims to promote capitalist and mainstream values within the Democratic Party.
