A close call occurred at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when two Delta planes got too close to each other, triggering anti-collision alarms in both aircraft.
Incident Details
Delta flight 1568, coming from Pittsburgh, was attempting to land but had to abort due to another plane on the runway. The pilot then decided to go around and circle the airport for another attempt. Meanwhile, Delta flight 2472 had just taken off from a parallel runway and was directed to turn right and climb to 4,000 feet, putting it directly in the path of the other plane.
The anti-collision alarms, also known as resolution advisories, sounded in the cockpits of both planes, warning the pilots to take evasive action. The controller then directed both aircraft away from each other. At their closest point, the planes were separated by about 1,800 feet and about 600 feet in altitude.
Delta Air Lines stated that the flight crew followed established procedures and maintained safe operations during the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will investigate the incident.
