Delivery Hero Boosts Subscription Plans to Counter Intense Competition Ahead of Uber Offer

Delivery Hero, the German‑based food‑delivery conglomerate, is leaning heavily on subscription programs to protect its market share as competition intensifies across its key regions. CEO Niklas Östberg told Reuters that the company’s expanding subscriber base has turned a “pretty brutal” competitive landscape into a more manageable one.

Subscriptions as a defensive tool

Analysts have long noted that subscription plans give delivery platforms a strategic edge. By encouraging repeat orders and lowering customer churn, these programs spread marketing costs over a larger volume of transactions. Östberg highlighted that in South Korea roughly half of Delivery Hero’s customers are subscribers, while in Saudi Arabia the figure is about 60 percent.

“We are more than a food‑delivery company today,” Östberg said, noting that a broader service offering gives customers additional reasons to subscribe, strengthening loyalty and revenue stability.

Competitive pressures and the Uber approach

The company operates in a crowded field that includes local rivals and global giants. In recent years, the firm has faced heightened competition in Asia, prompting the sale of its Foodpanda business in Taiwan to Singapore’s Grab earlier this year. At the same time, a takeover proposal from U.S. ride‑share leader Uber is moving forward, adding another layer of strategic complexity.

Despite these challenges, Delivery Hero lifted its 2026 financial guidance earlier on the day of the interview, signaling confidence in its growth trajectory. Östberg emphasized that while competition remains “hard,” it is not tougher than the previous year, suggesting that the company’s subscription strategy is already delivering tangible benefits.

Implications for the food‑delivery market

The push toward subscription models reflects a broader industry trend. Companies that can lock in customers through recurring fees are better positioned to weather price wars, promotional battles, and the entry of new competitors. For consumers, the rise of subscription plans often means lower per‑order costs and added perks, though it also encourages a deeper reliance on a single platform.

Delivery Hero’s experience underscores how subscription‑driven loyalty can serve as a buffer against aggressive market forces, especially in regions where local preferences and regulatory environments differ sharply.

Looking ahead

As Uber’s potential acquisition looms, the effectiveness of Delivery Hero’s subscription strategy will likely play a pivotal role in negotiations and future integration plans. If the subscriber base continues to grow, it could enhance the company’s valuation and provide a stronger negotiating position.

For now, the German firm remains focused on expanding its subscriber numbers and diversifying its service portfolio, aiming to turn today’s fierce competition into a sustainable advantage.
