DeLand has broken ground on Volusia County’s first transitional tiny home community, a project local leaders hope will help people move from homelessness to permanent housing.
Community Support
The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia recently began construction on the development off Palmetto Avenue after months of planning. The tiny home community will provide additional transitional housing for people working to rebuild their lives and move toward permanent, independent housing.
One current beneficiary of the program, Dave Campbell, has been living in transitional housing since January. He expressed his support for the project, stating, “I think it’s great. It teaches people how to be on their own and not having somebody tell them behind it.”
The project carries a price tag of about $1.2 million, with much of the funding coming from private donors. However, organizers say additional money is still needed before residents can move in.
