Deep Ellum community mourns Halloween shooting victim and pushes for safer streets

Dallas – The Deep Ellum entertainment district was rocked by three separate shootings on Halloween night, leaving four people dead, including 28‑year‑old Unique Benjamin. Benjamin’s longtime friend, Oshshanae Rose, traveled from Chicago to be with her on the night of the tragedy and now recalls the horror she witnessed.

Friend’s heartfelt remembrance

Rose told FOX 4 reporter David Sentendrey that she arrived by Uber to meet Benjamin and was immediately met with chaos: “I just saw a whole bunch of people running, people screaming, cars backing up, police yelling and the lights.” Rose said she and Benjamin had been best friends for a decade, describing her as “my world” and someone who “did everything together.”

Benjamin’s phone location remained stuck in Deep Ellum after the shooting, a painful reminder of the night she lost her life. “My friend was so sweet, she didn’t deserve this,” Rose said.

Community leaders call for action

Local activist Untruan Train Grant, who runs the street‑team “Learn With Train,” is among several Deep Ellum residents working to curb violence. Grant emphasized that Deep Ellum is an adult‑focused entertainment area, not a breeding ground for crime. He noted that many teens who cannot enter the district’s bars gather there, and some are homeless or simply looking for fun.

“We want people to understand that Deep Ellum is for adults,” Grant told Sentendrey. “Our team tries to steer kids away from the neighborhood and connect them with resources.”

Law‑enforcement response

Dallas Police have arrested one man who flashed a gun on the night of the shootings, but no suspects have been charged with the actual killings. The department released images and video of a suspected shooter earlier today in hopes of generating leads.

Federal authorities announced “Operation Deep Cover,” a safety initiative that will allocate additional resources to Deep Ellum in the wake of the Halloween violence. The operation aims to increase patrols, improve lighting, and support community‑based programs that deter youth crime.

What neighbors can do

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity and to support local outreach groups like Grant’s Learn With Train. Community members say a stronger partnership between law‑enforcement and neighborhood organizations is essential to restore the district’s reputation as a safe, adult‑oriented destination.

As the hunt for the shooters continues, the Deep Ellum community remains united in mourning Benjamin and the other victims—21‑year‑old Kaniesa Scott, 25‑year‑old Anthony McCleary, and 20‑year‑old Isaiah Boling—while working toward a future where such tragedies no longer occur.
