Bryson DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open champion, began his challenge at the British Open with a three-under 67 at Royal Birkdale in England.
DeChambeau, known for his ultra-aggressive style, outshone playing partners Scottie Scheffler and Tyrrell Hatton. He started his round with back-to-back birdies and made three more on the back nine.
A bogey at the 18th left a sour taste, but DeChambeau has put himself in the mix for an assault on the Claret Jug. He said it was a hard-fought battle and enjoyed seeing the fans and playing with Scheffler.
DeChambeau has missed the cut at all three previous majors this year but showed impressive form at Royal Birkdale.
