Deadly Woodward Avenue crash shuts down Woodward and Davison Freeway in Highland Park

Highland Park police and Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred just before 5:30 a.m. on Thursday on Woodward Avenue near the Davison Freeway. A black Chevrolet Equinox traveling north crossed the center line and slammed into a telephone pole.

Victims and emergency response

Two occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The driver was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The passenger, identified as a 36‑year‑old man from Detroit, was also seriously injured; despite on‑scene treatment by emergency crews, he was later pronounced dead.

Investigation details

Highland Park Police and Michigan State Police are leading the investigation. While the exact cause of the driver’s loss of control has not been confirmed, authorities indicated that alcohol consumption and excessive speed are likely factors. No further information about the driver’s identity or the passenger’s name has been released.

Road closures and reconstruction

Following the collision, Woodward Avenue was blocked in both directions, and the Davison Freeway was partially closed to allow investigators to reconstruct the scene and gather evidence. The closures remained in effect for several hours while police documented the impact site and cleared the telephone pole.

Public safety reminder

The incident underscores the importance of sober, responsible driving, especially during early‑morning hours when visibility can be limited. Local officials continue to urge motorists to obey speed limits and avoid impaired driving to keep our neighborhoods safe.

Authorities will release additional details as the investigation progresses.
