Leaders in Washington D.C. are working to reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2032. To achieve this goal, real estate developers and environmental stewards are prioritizing green and affordable housing. Urban Green, LLC and Somerset Development Company are two developers committed to providing eco-friendly and resilient residences.
Green Buildings and Affordable Housing
Green buildings, like those developed by Urban Green and Somerset, are environmentally responsible structures that use less energy and mitigate air pollution. Many of these buildings are awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The D.C. Green Bank is also helping to advance sustainable and accessible housing by providing financing solutions for eco-friendly systems.
The city’s budget for green housing initiatives has been cut, but stakeholders are working to find alternative funding sources. The D.C. Green Bank’s FY25 Annual Report shows that the organization invested over $25 million in 11 initiatives, creating 4,400 jobs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 21,000 metric tons.
Success Stories
Cycle House, a net-zero LEED Gold residence, is one example of a successful green housing project. The building was developed by Urban Green and features high-efficiency HVAC systems, Energy Star appliances, and EPA WaterSense fixtures. The Faircliff, another energy-efficient affordable residence, was developed by Somerset and features an air-leak-free design and ample electric-vehicle charging space.
