Daytona Beach officials are reviewing a waterfront condominium plan that could add Volusia County’s first water taxi service. The project, called The Aegean, would rise 11 stories on vacant land along South Peninsula Drive and feature an 88‑slip marina, a 15,000‑square‑foot pool, retail space and an amphitheater.
Mayor highlights transportation and community benefits
Mayor Derrick Henry explained that the water taxi would ferry residents and visitors across the Halifax River to Beach Street, providing a convenient alternative to driving. “It would allow people to be able to use their taxi to taxi across to Beach Street,” he said.
In addition to the transit option, the developers have pledged financial support for local amenities. Henry noted that the project team has agreed to contribute $500,000 toward enhancements at Lenox Park and to provide $25,000 each year for park upkeep. The developers also plan to assist with road improvements in the surrounding area.
Neighborhood concerns
Some residents have voiced worries about increased traffic on South Peninsula Drive, a two‑lane road that already serves the nearby community. They fear that additional residents and tourists could create congestion and impact the quality of life in adjacent neighborhoods.
Next steps for the proposal
The Aegean project must still clear a rezoning process and receive approval from the Daytona Beach City Commission. Henry acknowledged the hurdles, saying, “It’s going to be a challenge. It’s not a done deal, but it is something that I believe is worthy of consideration by our community and our commission.”
City staff will continue to evaluate the development’s impact on traffic, public services and the overall waterfront vision for Daytona Beach. Public input will be sought during upcoming commission meetings, giving residents a chance to weigh in on the balance between growth and preserving the character of the area.
