Daytona Beach Lifeguards Rescue Five Swimmers, One Remains Critical

On Thursday afternoon, lifeguard EMTs from Volusia County Beach Safety responded to a rip current emergency at the 1900 block of Daytona Beach. The team arrived at approximately 2:27 p.m. and quickly located five swimmers who had been pulled offshore by the strong, unpredictable current.

Rescue and Immediate Care

Thanks to the lifeguards’ swift reaction and training, all five individuals were brought safely back to shore. Three of the rescued swimmers required immediate medical attention and were transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Of those three, two were reported to be recovering well later in the evening. The fourth swimmer remained in critical condition as of around 7 p.m., while the fifth was released from the hospital after receiving treatment.

Safety Reminder from Beach Officials

Volusia County Beach Safety emphasized that rip currents can develop suddenly and pose a serious danger to anyone in the water. The agency’s social‑media post reminded beachgoers to always swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower and to use the Volusia Beaches app to locate lifeguard‑covered areas.

“The ocean can change in an instant. Rip currents are powerful, unpredictable, and can quickly turn a day at the beach into an emergency,” the post read.

What Parents and Families Should Know

Families planning a day at the beach are encouraged to discuss water safety with children before entering the surf. Teaching kids to recognize the signs of a rip current—such as water that appears to be moving away from shore or a break in the wave pattern—can help prevent panic and improve the chances of a safe rescue.

Volusia County also recommends that swimmers who feel themselves being pulled offshore stay calm, conserve energy, and swim parallel to the shoreline until they escape the current’s pull.

Community Response

Local residents expressed gratitude for the lifeguards’ professionalism and for the rapid medical care provided to the injured swimmers. The incident underscores the importance of well‑trained public‑safety personnel and the value of community resources like the beach‑safety app.

Authorities continue to monitor conditions along the Atlantic coast and will issue advisories as needed to keep beachgoers safe.
