Davenport Community Garden Gets Water

The Davenport Community Garden in New Haven has finally gotten its water turned on, after months of relying on manual watering methods. The garden, which is one of 19 community gardens and micro-farms in the city, had been struggling to stay afloat after the nonprofit organization that managed it, Gather New Haven, faced a financial crisis and handed over management to the city.

Community Garden Offers More Than Just Gardening

In addition to growing vegetables and flowers, the garden also hosts various activities such as yoga, meditation, drum circles, and community gatherings. The garden’s bee keeper, Emilie Egger, and other gardeners have been working to create a welcoming space for the community.

A recent barbecue and seminar at the garden featured Domingo Medina, the founder of Peels & Wheels Composting, who offered suggestions for improving the garden’s composting system. Medina emphasized the importance of creating a plan and having the right equipment to make composting sustainable.

The garden’s future is still uncertain, as the city has not yet announced a new management plan. Gardeners are concerned about who will provide and pay for essential supplies, such as water and seeds, and who will make decisions about the garden’s management.
